2290 | Credit by Experience (CBE)

Policy Manager: [Policy Manager]

The intent of the Credit by Experience (CBE) process is to allow prospective students with prior experience an opportunity to have a body of work reviewed for possible credit within the CIA curriculum. It is NOT designed to enable students to achieve credit for a course that they have failed or for which an “Incomplete” has turned to an “F.” Students who think they are eligible for CBE should contact the Admissions Office.

Credits earned through CBE count as transfer credit. A maximum of 30 credits can be earned through CBE. Additional documents such as a resume/CV must be submitted.

CBE is awarded based on an interdepartmental review of application materials. The departments reviewing CBE requests consist of representatives from Admissions, Liberal Arts, and the Division Chair of the intended major. In the event the CBE applicant has not declared a major, a Division Chair will not be required. If credit is awarded, the Registrar’s Office will notify the student of the application of this credit to the program of study and completion of degree requirements.

CBE for prospective or current students must be requested at the time of application, during the admissions process, or within the first semester of enrollment at CIA. If a student declares or changes their major after their first semester of attendance, they may request a CBE review of only major courses in the newly declared major. Work already used to gain credit for another course or by other means may not be used to gain credit through CBE. Transfer credit is applied before credit from CBE.
